How to Really Design Digital Systems

Subject: Cypress changes.

There was a mistake on starting up cypress on the sheet I passed out.
The hp computers are now usable, I think.

Before you start it is desirable (necessary) to create a subdirectory
in you home directory on either the HP computers or the Sunpal[1-6]
computers.
I haven't done so on the PC but I would suggest following the
directions in the book.

I have created a tar file which contains the right information.
It is on my athena directory
You may access it via the filename
  /mit/troxel/tar.cypress_start
It is also on the sunpals in my home directory. Unlike you this is
different from my athena directory.
You may access it via the filename
  /homes/troxel/tar.cypress_start

You use the tar file similar to suggested in the handout, namely:

  attach troxel
  cd
  tar xf /mit/troxel/tar.cypress_start

It should create the subdirectory vhdlbook and under it should be ch1,
ch2, etc. and each contains some files.
Continue with instructions in the book.

I forgot the /troxel on the following sheet.

You need to source the appropriate file to set the path and
environment variables.

On the sunpals it is
  source /fs/u21g/warp.sun/warp.cshrc
It works with or without the /fs included.

On the HP computers (palxx) it is
  source /fs/u21g/warp.hpux/warp.cshrc
It works only with the /fs included.

On either type of computer, you must use Adobe acroread to look at
the documentation. The command to use is
  acroread

The documentation is located in the directory
  /fs/u21g/warp.sun/doc/

The same stuff should also be in
  /fs/u21g/warp.hpux/doc/

The best thing is to send email to 6.195staff@mit to report any
problems or if you have any questions.

Hi,
Here are some information about the lab and materials for problem set 1.
Do not hesitate to send any question you may have to 6.195staff@mit.edu .

Lab (38-600) open hours:
------------------------
Mon-Fri: 9am - 11:45pm
Sat: 12noon - 5:45pm
Sun: 12noon - 11:45pm

Staffed hours:
--------------
Tue: 11am - 1pm, 2:30pm - 4pm (Amrit)
Wed: 3pm - 4pm (Amrit)
Thu: 11am - 1pm, 2:30pm - 4pm (Amrit)
Fri: 11am - 4pm (Janet), 11am - 1pm, 2pm - 5pm (Amrit, 6.111)

Please note that 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 5pm on Fridays, I will be in the lab
helping 6.111 students. Feel free to ask questions when I am not occupied
in 6.111. If you can not make it in these hours in any week, send email and
we'll try to arrange some other time for that week.

Materials for problem set 1:
----------------------------
The Coop as well as Quantum Books are waiting to get more books. In the mean
time, I have made photocopies of sections of the book needed to do problem
set 1. You can pick them up at the lab desk at 38-600.

Subject: printing
Status: R

It seems that printing from acroread has problems with athena
printers.
At least some problems were reported with the sunpals and I
experienced some problems with the hp computers and also at home.

It is possible (easy) to print to a file with acroread.
One can then print this file on any athena printer from either the
sunpals or any athena machine

Printing from an HP computer seems not to work. I'll send email when
that works. For now print to a file and login to another machine to
print the file.

The name of the (two-sided) printer in the digital lab is pal-hp4si
It is an athena printer.

athena printers are not put in the /etc/printcap file of the local
machine, they are put in the Hesiod data base instead.
Solaris machines do not have an /etc/printcap file but evidently
acroread (thinks) it knows how to find the available printers.
